This text was written by Julio Camba, a Spanish newspaperman, who started writing in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was a great humorist who wrote about his human subjects with great respect. His writings were like sketches and portraits of the people he ran into in New York. He was accused of spreading anarchy in Argentina and was subsequently deported to Spain where he continued to write for major Spanish and Spanish American papers. In "Los Estados Engomados" or The Art of Chewing Gum...El Hábito de Mascar Goma..." he wrote about his observations of individuals he encountered and the quasi-public obsession with chewing gum in most places.
